This class explores the skills and processes required when designing costume for performance and suits different levels of artistic and sewing ability. Students will focus on their understanding of character as much as the development of a costume design through sketches and renderings, and discover that you don’t have to have highly developed drawing skills to design a costume! Students will learn ways to explain their design ideas clearly and will complete a costume piece to display at a reception at the end of the course.

Students in grades 2-4 will spend time talking about animals, acting like animals, and even “talking” like animals! Through various movement and vocal exercises and activities, students will explore the world of animals, and will have the opportunity to pick which animal they would like to portray. We will re-develop one of Aesop’s fables using our own chosen animals, create props, some costume pieces and set pieces, and prepare our Aesop’s fable for an end-of-workshop performance for parents. Students will be able to take home their prop/costume craft and will also make a storybook to keep as a souvenir!

Climb on up as we go on a theatrical adventure! With each step, campers will exercise their creativity, enhance their reading skills and grow their self confidence. The poetry of Shel Silverstein and other classics from children’s literature will be our guide as we have fun creating characters and telling stories on stage. Each day, students will use familiar tales as a starting point for their own imagination. They will begin their day in a warm up that explores spacial- and body-awareness, then rotate through a series of voice, movement, drawing, costume and performance activities. Family and friends are welcome to join us on the last day of class as we enjoy and celebrate each student’s work!
