When Penfold began in 2007, its founders envisioned a Central Texas theatre company that would connect diverse audiences to intimate stories of empathy and hope. Under their leadership, Penfold has made incredible contributions to our community in twelve short years: 42 professional productions, 129 local awards and honors, 750 artist contracts, and 47,000 patrons and students served.
The company offers a wide range of plays and musicals from classics to world premieres; it partners with city and nonprofit arts organizations to build a sustainable local arts community; and it seeks to give back through free performances, education programs and outreach to our visual and hearing impaired populations.
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization now operating with an annual budget of about $250,000, Penfold is poised for a new chapter of dramatic growth. In its second decade, the company is recommitting to its vision through bolder programming, deeper community engagement and a new, permanent facility. However, to move forward on these initiatives, Penfold will need an expanded leadership team with new skills and experience.
This is the birth of the Leadership Fund.
Our first goal is to hire Penfold’s first full-time Managing Director. The Managing Director will be dedicated to fundraising, marketing and organizational oversight. The impact of this key position is two-fold. First, it will generate much-needed resources for Penfold’s mainstage programs and outreach efforts. Second, it will free the founding artists to focus on what they do best: creating powerful arts experiences.
Grace Riehl was hired to this position after a nationwide search. Born and raised in Waco, Texas, Ms. Riehl received a BFA in theatre from Baylor University before moving to New York City, where she earned an MFA in performing arts management and worked with nationally celebrated companies including the American Theatre Wing, the Public Theatre and Anne Bogart’s SITI Company. She joined the Penfold team on September 1st.
By our calculation, this investment in marketing and fundraising staff will grow Penfold’s budget to pay the Managing Director’s salary by her second year. In the meantime, we need $40,000 to provide the necessary financial onramp for the new hire.
