Reimagining Classics

Over its past 13 seasons, Penfold has given audiences fresh eyes to see old stories. Now, in our Vision 2025 Plan, we’re fully embracing that rich tradition and taking it to a bold new level!

As we re-emerge from the pandemic, we’ll be exploring what gives “classic” stories their timeless power and how we make that power relevant and resonant for today’s Central Texans. We’ll also look critically at texts that—for better or worse—have become part of our modern psyche and forge a more inclusive definition of the theatrical canon.

To do this, we’ll be sharpening existing programs you already love while launching several new initiatives:

Plays & Musicals

Penfold in the Park

Holiday Radiocasts

New Play Commissions

Great Plays in Great Places

The aim of the Vision 2025 Plan is to serve our Sector, our City and our Selves in new ways:

  • Sector. Engage the national theatre community by challenging how we define and present the classic theatrical canon, while augmenting it with new, original work. At the same time, nurture the craft and careers of local artists through a new Artistic Company and Apprenticeships.
  • City. Spotlight Central Texas’ unique cultural heritage by approaching stories from a local perspective and hosting events in some of Austin’s most iconic and historic sites. As we do so, create a diverse and inclusive environment that fosters community and shared identity.
  • Selves. Let great stories, powerfully performed by local artists, continue to excite, inspire and invite us toward greater empathy and understanding of the human experience.
