Penfold Theatre presents Vincent, by Leonard Nimoy.
Vincent is the story of Vincent van Gogh, told from the perspective of his brother Theo. Correspondence between Vincent and Theo reveals the struggles of a self-doubting artist whose romantic and creative endeavors are misunderstood. Underscored by a visual accompaniment of slides of van Gogh’s work, the play is a dramatized art history seminar brought to life by the personal narrative of the family member who enabled both the development and the unconventional lifestyle of a brilliant artist.
Vincent was adapted into a one-person show by Leonard Nimoy (a.k.a., Mr. Spock of Star Trek) from a play by Phillip Stevens. Nimoy originated the solo role at the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis in 1980.
The 2026 production of Vincent at Penfold Theatre is a revival of Penfold’s 2023 production, in which co-Artistic Directors Ryan Crowder and Nathan Jerkins share the one-man lead in alternating solo performances. For their 2023 performances, Crowder and Jerkins were named Best Two Men in a One-Man Show by The Austin Chronicle.
“insightful and often moving…transcends the usual clichés surrounding the high-maintenance artist with the tortured relationship to his aural appendage…looks beyond merely sensational biographical episodes to the unifying themes in three principal facets of Vincent’s adult life: God, love and art.” – LA Times, 2012
“Small, intimate staging. A personal story told well. That’s how you make static paintings resonate.” – Austin Chronicle, 2023
Vincent is produced by special arrangement with THE DRAMATIC PUBLISHING COMPANY of Woodstock, Illinois.
